Garnet Women Take a Trip to Splitsville

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -The Swarthmore volleyball team made its 2007 Tarble Pavilion-debut, splitting a pair of matches with Neumann and Marymount (Md.) on a steamy Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet (2-4) jumped on Neumann (4-2) in the early match, claiming the first game 30-26. The Knights re-grouped and pushed past Swarthmore by sweeping the final three games by scores of 30-17, 30-24, 30-28.
Swarthmore came out firing in the afternoon match with Marymount (1-2), using a strong middle attack to claim a 3-0 victory by scores of 30-23, 30-8, 30-25. Junior outside hitter Jen Wang had a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs and four aces. Classmate Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) paced the defense with 16 digs. Vanessa Wells '08 (Chicago, Ill. / Lincoln) added seven kills while Karen Berk '08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford), Katherine Gold '08 (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) and Johanna Bond '10 (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford-Sutherland) posted six kills apiece.
Sophomore Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) racked up 18 assists and five kills while first-year Sarah Lambert (Darlington, Pa. / Blackhawk) contributed 17 assists and a game-high five aces.
Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion this Tuesday, Sept. 11, hosting Moravian at 7:00 p.m.
