Garnet Hit Low on Case ACE

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. -- Even Mother Nature herself is interested just how well the Swarthmore golf team can do in 2009, this time unleashing fierce gusts of wind across the ACE Club Saturday afternoon to test the Garnet duffers.

Swarthmore responded by posting the lowest team score among four competitors (332) to top DeSales (357), Philadelphia University (362), and University of Sciences in Philadelphia (372).

Garnet senior David Lau (Hong Kong, China / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) posted the low round at the Gary Player Signature-design course, carding an 82.  Three other Swarthmore golfers accounted for the top four scores with senior Michael Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkinsglf_bernasek_wedge_09 School) (right) and freshman Paul Weston (Waterbury, Vt. / Harwood Union) posting matching 83s, while first-year Alex Nichamin (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) entered the clubhouse with an 84.  Junior Kelly Schoolmeester (Irmo, S.C. / Irmo) was right behind his teammates with an 85, the sixth-best score on the afternoon.

Swarthmore is slated to compete in the Lebanon Valley College Invitational this Monday, April 6 but Mother Nature is once again meddling with the conditions.  The Weather Channel may be predicting 70% chance of rain with temperatures in the 50s for central Pennsylvania but that will do little to deter the Swarthmore men from teeing up if called upon.
