Garnet Men Make Big Splash
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's (4-5, 3-1 CC) freestyle relay gave the final push in a 103-102 win over Gettysburg (3-4, 3-1 CC), while the Swarthmore women (6-3, 4-1 CC) suffered a tough 114-91 loss to undefeated Gettysburg (8-0, 5-0 CC) at Ware Pool on Saturday afternoon.The Centennial Conference meet opened up with a celebration for the graduating class of 2008: Andrew Frampton, John Heagy, Katherine Koch, Jennie Lewis and Franny Zhang.
Junior Anne Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) started the day out for Swarthmore as she glided through the 1,000 freestyle with ease finishing at 10:47.31 earning her first win of the meet. Also taking first position on the men’s side was Frampton (Silver Springs, Md. / Gonzaga College) reaching the wall at 10:09.59 as he led teammate Stephen Shymon ’09 (San Diego, Calif. / University of San Diego) to a finish time of 10:20.13.
The Garnet men took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle; Douglas Gilchrist-Scott ’09 (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) was first with 22.72 on the clock and freshman Santiago Lombo (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) posted a 22.90 time.
Swarthmore placed 1-2 in both the women’s and men’s 200 individual medley; Zhang (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School) came out on top with a time of 2:16.64, closely followed by Casey Osborn ’10 (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) at 2:19.35. On the men’s side Sterling Satterfield ’11 (Durham, N.C. / Jarlden) placed first with a 2:03.90 race time while Heagy (Coraopolis, Pa. / Sewickly) finished at 2:05.57.
Picking up her second win of the day, Miller posted a 2:10.97 in the 200-yard butterfly followed by Osborn (2:14.50) and Lewis (2:14.99) taking second and third positions, respectively.
The Garnet took the top two places in the 500 freestyle; Frampton, picked up his second win of the afternoon finishing at 4:58.10. Shymon placed second with a race-time of 4:58.22.
The women finished on a high note when Zhang, Julie Wrobel ’10 (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Lawrence), Chelsea Brett ’11 (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Emmaus) and Lewis won a 400 freestyle relay nail-bitter with a time of 3:44.47.
Going into the men’s 400 freestyle relay the Garnet were behind four points with a score of 96-92 in favor of Gettysburg. Following strong efforts from Shymon, Tom Keller ’09 (Brockton, Mass. / Moses Brown), Gilchrist-Scott and the final push from Michael Ahn ’10 (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) the relay team out-touched the Bullets with a time of 3:19.69 to win the meet.
Both swim teams will continue Centennial action traveling to Carlisle, Pa. taking on Dickinson College on Sat., Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
