Reynolds Makes W&L Fall Festival Final
Swarthmore's Sonya Reynolds '07 advanced to the 1st Flight finals of the Washington & Lee Fall Festival this past weekend in Lexington, VA. Six Garnet women made the trip, with three doubles' entries and six singles' entries.
Reynolds defeated Sheena David of CMU, 6-1, 6-2 in her first round match, and then advanced past Ginny Wortham of W&L, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. Reynolds' tournament ended in the final with a hard fought match against top-ranked All-American Emily Applegate of W&L 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The junior also played in the 1st Flight doubles' draw, pairing with freshman Jennie Park. The tandem won their first match against Kelsey Mansmann and Gayle Smith of UMW, 8-3. The duo advanced to the semi-finals, before falling to eventual doubles champions, Kelly Nakamura and Amy Staloch from Carnegie Mellon in a heartbreaker, 9-7.
Park fell to Applegate in her 1st Flight Singles Draw, 6-1, 6-1, yet rallied in the consolation bracket to defeat W&L's Kristen McClung 6-1, 6-4. Jamie Midyette '08 also dropped her first-round 2nd Flight Singles Draw, falling to Katie Kingsbury of W&L 6-3, 6-1, before rallying to defeat Kelly Nakamura of CMU 7-5, 6-1 in the consolation bracket.
Midyette and Marissa Lee '09 faltered in their Flight 2 Doubles' Draw, losing to W&L's Katie Kingsbury and Kelly Will, 8-0. Lee also competed in the 3rd Flight Singles Draw, along with senior teammate Anjalie Aggarwal. Both dropped their first-round matches, and then eventually met each other in the consolation bracket, with Lee prevailing 6-1, 6-2.
Aggarwal played with Sonia Vallabh '06, in the Flight 3 Doubles Draw, losing to Natalie Day and Patty Roberts of W&L, 8-2. Vallabh struggled in her singles' draw, losing difficult matches to overpowering W&L players.
The Fall Festival completes Swarthmore's fall schedule. The Garnet resume competition in March 2006.
