<p align="justify" class="normal">Dans ce café chantant, je danse. Le djebel Amour, c'est son nom. Comment j'aurais su l'histoire de ces femmes dont on raconte qu'elles quittaient la tribu des hauts plateaux pour les quartiers de la ville proche ou lointaine, quartiers réservés où des soldats dépensaient leur solde, de taverne en bordel. Jeunes et moins jeunes, dans les cafés maures de la rue, elles fumaient, buvaient l'absinthe avec les hommes, bavardaient et riaient jusqu'à la chambre partagée, une étoffe rouge plissée séparait les amours, au fond d'un long couloir. Légionnaires, spahis, tirailleurs, parfois des officiers français se rencontraient, assis sur des nattes, faisant cercle autour des danseuses, la plus jeune chantait, on savait qu'elle était retenue, au premier regard, par l'homme blanc, le chef discret, mais si le fils du Caïd entrait dans la vaste pièce, il renoncerait, l'officier français, à la plus belle des femmes du djebel Amour.</p>
