All-Tournament selection Lauren Deveareaux scored 18 points to lead Plymouth State (1-1) to a 86-52 victory over Immaculata in the consolation game of the Swat Tip Off on Saturday night.

Meg Legere scored 30 points and grabbed 8 boards as Immaculata fell to 0-2.

Eagles Soar Past Garnet

Jessica Shifflett scored 13 points and Tournament MVP Debbie Bruen added 10 as Mary Washington defeated Swarthmore 61-52 to win the annual Swat Tip Off on Saturday night at Tarble Pavilion.

The Eagles used a 12-2 run at the start of the second half to open 32-26 advantage that was never relinquished. Mary Washington benefited from a torrid second half shooting performance (14 for 28) to move to 2-0 on the season.

Radiance Walters '06 earned an All-Tournament selection by scoring a game-high 21 points and corralling 13 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Ali Wolff '05 scored 12 points on 5 for 9 shooting while Laura Popovics contributed 10 points in just eleven minutes of play.

Swarthmore (1-1) travels to central Maryland on Tuesday night to open their Centennial Conference schedule when they square off against 9th-ranked McDaniel College at 7:00 p.m.

NYU Downs Tide 127-70

Swarthmore's two meet win streak came to an end with a 127-70 non-conference loss at NYU.

Andrew Koczo '07 took nine points in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:25.01 to lead the Garnet, while Andrew Frampton '08 placed second in both the 1,000 and 500 freestyle earning eight points.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Frampton, Wootae Min '07, Andrew McKay '07 and Jon Augat '07 also took first place points.

Swarthmore returns to the pool on Tuesday when it travels to Ursinus for a 6 p.m. Centennial meet.

Garnet Fall to Ephs in Equinox Final

Matt Gustafson '05 scored a game-high 27 points but the Garnet fell to Williams 81-61 in the final of the Equinox Classic.
The two squads battled back and forth in the first half ending in a 31-31 tie at the break.

A Gustafson backdoor layup gave the Garnet a 38-37 lead with 16:02 remaining, but an Ephs 12-0 run made it 49-38. Williams extended the lead to 14 points before the Garnet used a 12-4 run to cut it to six points at 57-51, on a Dillon McGrew '07 three pointer with 8:52 remaining.

That's as close as the Garnet could get as Williams hit four three points to open its lead to 23 at 78-55 with 3:11 remaining.

Michael Graham led the Ephs with 19 points and Matt Weisbrot added 14 while Jaris Cole earned a spot on the Equinox All-Tournament Team with Tucker Kain. cole recorded 11 points and nine boards and Kain added nine of each.

Gustafson earned All-Tournament honors for the Garnet. Jeff Maxim '07 chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds and Mark Rohde '07 added seven of each.

The Garnet travel to Drew on Tuesday for an 8:00 p.m. game.

In the other Equinox game, Haverford defeated Connecticut College 73-61. Mark Gabriel scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds for the Fords to earn a spot on the All-Equinox squad, while Charles Stone was named all-tournament in leading the Camels with 13 points.

Bruen Skies Eagles to 88-64 Win

Debbie Bruen dropped in 16 points, while Jenn Olinger and Jessica Shifflett contributed 12 points apiece to lead Mary Washington to a 88-64 win over Plymouth State in the second game in the annual Swat Tip-Off at Tarble Pavilion.

The Eagles outscored the Panthers 53-37 in the second half alone to earn a date with defending champion and host Swarthmore College on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

Joy DePalo led PSU with 13 points while Lauren Devereaux added 12 points and seven boards.

The Panthers will face Immaculata in the consolation game of the Swat Tip Off at 6:00 p.m.

Walters “Pops” Garnet Into Championship

Radiance Walters '06 tallied 11 points to along with 12 rebounds, while freshman Laura Popovics added a team-high 13 points as Swarthmore rolled to a 76-39 victory over Immaculata in the opening round of the annual Swat Tip-Off on Friday night.

The Garnet raced to a 9-0 lead to open the game and held the Mighty Macs to 18% shooting from the floor in the first half while forcing 19 turnovers to take a commanding 38-9 lead at halftime. Walters did most of her damage in the first half, shooting four for eight from the field and corralling nine boards, including six offensive.

Walters, who had four double-doubles in 2003-04, finished with seven offensive boards to go along with three steals and three assists in only 17 minutes of action.

Popovics made her first appearance in a Garnet uniform with just under fourteen minutes to go in the half and instantly became a fan favorite to the 155 fans in attendance. The freshman point guard hit the first shot she ever took in Tarble Pavilion, draining a three-pointer off a kick from Ali Wolff '05 at 10:46 to give Swarthmore a 14-3 lead.

It was all Swarthmore in the second half as all 14 players recorded a field goal and the Garnet saw their lead increase to as much as forty points on four separate occasions. The first time occurred when Popovics canned her third trey of the game with 9:07 left in the game. The stoic 'Pops', as she is known to her teammates, brought the crowd to their feet a few ticks later. The frosh drove to the basket from the left wing and came out on the other side of the hoop, flipping in a reverse lay-up over her shoulder for a 62-22 Swat lead.

Popovics added three assists and two steals in eighteen minutes, while senior tri-captain Kristen Lee contributed 10 points and four steals. Fellow captain Wolff was a perfect 4-4 from the floor for eight points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. Cara Tigue '06 grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to establish Swarthmore's record at 1-0.

Meg Legere led Immaculata (0-1) with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jamie Williams added 10 points and eight boards.

Swarthmore will square off against Mary Washington, a 88-64 winner over Plymouth State, at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night in the championship game of the Swat Tip-Off. The Garnet won the 2003 Tip Off by defeating Moravian College 74-67.

Immaculata will face Plymouth State in the consolation game with tip scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Garnet Rallies By Camels in Opener

Matt Gustafson '05 scored 25 points to lead the Garnet to a 65-61 come from behind victory over Connecticut College in the first round of the Equinox Classic at Haverford College.

The Garnet struggled in the first half, shooting just 26.3% from the floor (10-of-38) while Connecticut was hitting at a 45.2% clip (14-31) to build a 30-24 advantage at the break.

Swarthmore found the mark in the second half hitting 14-of-29 attempts (48.3%) to outscore the Camels 41-31 and pull out the victory.

Jeff Maxim '07 scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Matt Kurman '08 came off the bench to score 14 points.

Charles Stone, Jahkeen Washington and Zak Harris each scored 12 points for the Camels.

Swarthmore takes on Williams tomorrow at 3:00 and the Camels face Haverford at 1:00 pm at Tarble Pavilion in the conclusion of the Equinox Classic.

Swat Dips F&M

The Garnet men cruised to a 121-84 victory over defending Centennial Conference Champion Franklin & Marshall by taking nine of the eleven events on Saturday afternoon in Ware Pool.

The quartet of Jeff Schneider '05, Andrew Koczo '07, Reid Johnson '08, and Anders Taylor '07 set the tone by winning the opening event, the 200 medley relay, in a time of 1:42.91.

The next event, the 1000 freestyle, featured two freshmen with loads of potential and impressive splits. Swarthmore's Andrew Frampton and the Diplomats' Derek Nowak went stroke-for-stroke, putting up times that haven't been seen in Ware in nine years. Nowak out-kicked Frampton in the final legs to take victory with a time of 10:01.14, with Frampton touching the wall in 10:02.75. Frampton's time shattered the school record of 10:09.98, set by Mark Friedberg '98 in 1995.

Michael Auerbach '05 (1:48.74) and Jason Horowitz '07 (1:51.56) put the Garnet back in the driver's seat, coming in 1-2 in the 200 freestyle. Koczo followed with a win in the 50 free in a time of 22.78, out-touching the Dips' John Czaplicki (22.81).

Taylor was the next Garnet swimmer to prevail, claiming victory in the 200 IM in 2:05.07, with teammate Rob McKeon '07 taking third place in a time of 2:11.26.

F&M grabbed a host of points by sweeping all three spots in the 100 butterfly, yet Auerbach answered with his second win, taking the 100 free (49.34) with teammate Horowitz nipping at heels in second position (50.28).

Taylor became a double-winner in the next event, winning the 100 backstroke in 57.42, while Frampton got redemption in the 500 free by holding off a hard-charging Nowak with a time of 4:57.63.

Koczo claimed his third victory of the day in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.84), leading a Swarthmore sweep of the event with teammates John Heagy '08 (1:05.90) and Kaena Horowitz '06 (1:06.18).

The Swarthmore men capped off the victory with a thrilling win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Jonathan Augat '07 swam a 21.97 split to run down F&M's Valerie Perfanov, propelling the group of Frampton, Jason Horowitz, and Auerbach to first place in a time of 1:30.61.

The victory pushes Swarthmore's record to 2-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Garnet will travel to New York City on Saturday, November 20th, to face off against NYU at 2:00 p.m.

Larson Captures C Flight Singles Title

Jessica Larson '06 captured the C Flight Singles title at the 2004 Mid-Atlantic Classic.

Larson also teamed with Candice Cherk '07 to advance to the semifinal round of the C Flight Doubles along with Maisha Howard '08 and Anna Ruff '06.

Cherk reached the semifinals of the B Flight Singles Draw.

F&M Edges Garnet

Franny Zhang '08 was a triple-winner at Ware Pool on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as defending Centenial Conference Franklin & Marshall squeaked out a 114-91 victory over Swarthmore.

Zhang took victory in both the 100 free (55.12) and 200 free (1:59.79), while teaming with Jennie Lewis '08, Sarah Cotcamp '07, and Whitney Nekoba '08 to take the 200 meter freestyle relay in a time of 1:43.16.

Lewis also took victory in the 100 butterfly, cruising in with the winning time of 1:00.31. Katherine Reid '05 was the only other Garnet winner, claiming the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:03.90, besting the second place finisher by almost eight seconds.

The Garnet women (2-1, 1-1 CC) travel north to New York City on Saturday afternoon to compete against NYU, starting at 2:00 p.m.
